What are you doing?

No seriously, what are you doing?

If you’re reading this article (or others I have posted) to educate yourself about how to build your MLM business, thats great but if you’re not taking action afterwards then all you’re really doing is procrastinating.  And if you’re reading my latest bit of MLM advice just to convince yourself that you aren’t procrastinating you have a serious mindset issue that you need to resolve and resolve quickly.

Sure education is important but when you’re building an MLM business you need to educate on your time not on your business’ time.  By that I mean you need to be working your business at the time when your prospects are most likely to be paying available.  This means if you are contacting people by phone you should be doing so late afternoon and early evening.  Probably the latter if you still are working a JOB.  Even if you are trying to reach out to people via email or online chat or Twitter or some other form of social media, you need to be interacting with them in this same time frame.  Save educating yourself for those times when you can’t reach out to anyone.

Don’t fool yourself with busy work which while using up time is not terribly productive.  Ask yourself constantly “Am I being productive, or just keeping busy?”

Perhaps you’re trying to perfect something.  Honestly nothing will ever be perfect.  When I look back at the articles I have provided giving advice on different aspects of the MLM business I can see where I could have written something better or provided more examples or even an anecdote but the important thing is that I wrote the article.  I can always come back to it and expand upon it later if I truly feel the need (or you as a reader request it).  Perfectionism is just another form of procrastinating.

For the most part we tend to procrastinate out of fear.  Fear of not doing something right or not knowing what to do or fear of failure, all of which can be boiled down to the fear of the unknown.  Well I’ll suggest to you this… everything is unknown.  Do you really know what is going to happen in the next second? How about the one after that? Or after that one?  Everything truly is unknown yet you managed to survive those couple of seconds with nothing adverse happening to you so don’t let the unknown or the fear of it slow you down.

If any of this is hitting home with you then welcome to the club because I too was (and still am at times) a procrastinator.   However instead of giving into the fear that might be holding me back I recognize it for what it is and change my mindset and recommitting to myself to change my behavior.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” — Aristotle

So if you procrastinate… repeatedly… excellence or success is unlikely to follow.

Get into action and make a habit of not procrastinating.

It’s All About YOU

I’m sure you’ve been to plenty of meetings where you’re told there are 3 pieces to the puzzle of being successful in your chosen MLM:

  • business opportunity
  • product
  • you

Typically they go on to say that the business opportunity is supplied by the company and optimized to provide those that work hard an incredible income.  Additionally the product is provided for you and is of the highest quality.  Lastly, what you need to bring to the table is you.

After this its usually followed by the fact that the one thing you have to work on is you.  While I certainly subscribe to the philosoply of personal development, I would suggest that there is one other aspect of you that you need to work on and that is You, Inc. Brand yourself.

Every company out there, including MLMs, touts their brand.  From the pen you write with to the car you drive to the computer you are reading this article on, everything is branded.  If you want to be successful in marketing you need to brand yourself.

Consider the internet.  The World Wide Web proves the case for branding more than any product. Why? Because anybody can (and does) have a website.  But the ones you go back to are the ones you trust whether its MLMExpertAdvice.com or Google.com the point is the brand name tells you the visit will be worth your time… repeatedly.  The brand is a promise of the value that you will receive from your visit.

Email is the same.  You decide which emails you are going to read versus tossing in the trash unread based on personal branding… the name of the sender.  You know that you can trust the sender not to waste your time.

Now what I am about to say may go against what your sponsor or upline is telling you… you aren’t a (insert MLM company name here) distributor.  By that what I mean is you aren’t defined by that company nor are you limited by the title “distributor”. You are a brand.

Just like Starbucks, Coke, Pepsi, or Geico, you are a brand.  And the first thing any brand does is define itself.  What is it that your brand does that makes it different? Write it out in 15 words or less. Why the limit? Because your brand has a limited time to capture the attention anyone its presented to.  Your brand statement needs to grab your prospect quickly.

First figure out what things make you different than not only your competitors but your colleagues, your fellow MLMers.  Have you done anything recently to make you stand out?  What would your colleagues or your customers say is memorable or noteworth about you?

What feature and benefits does your brand bring to the market?  Are you timely so that your customers can count on your reliability?  Are you honest and forthright so that others can count on you and trust you?  What do you do that add value? And finally what do you want to be famous for?  This is your brand… and Your company’s vision.

Its ALL about YOU!
