Are you Chrematophobic?

No its not a fear of cream or even chrome, chrematophobia is the fear of money. Personally I didn’t think it existed or if it did that it was as rare as Loch Ness sitings after all who wouldn’t want to have vast sums of cash; however I found out that I too had suffered from the fear of vast sums of money when attending a seminar on wealthbuilding. My realization came in the form of simply completing a statement with missing words:

___________ is the root of all evil

I and many others answered it with “Money” but if you read the Bible you’ll know the actualy statement from 1 Timothy 6:10 is:

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

So its not money but the love of money that is the root of all evil.  Perhaps I remembered wrong when I went to fill in the blank after all its an honest mistake right?  A further exercise, asking us to write down what we would feel about someone who had an absolute abundance of money and was able to do anything they wanted whenever they wanted to, completely squashed any illusions (or delusions) I had about my relationship to money.  To put it mildly I didn’t think much of that individual with all the wads of cash and if I felt that way how could I ever become that person?  My own feelings towards abundance were sabotaging my abilities to obtain it.  I had joined an MLM so that I could live in abundance but my own mind was telling me stop.

So how do you go about shutting down this programming thats been instilled in us almost from birth?  Have you not heard:

  • Eat everything on your plate; people are starving in Africa/India/etc.
  • Money doesn’t grow on trees.
  • It’s unfair that some people make so much money.
  • I wonder how he got all that money… legally.
  • He/She bought that just to show off not because he/she needed it.

If you’ve ever heard these statements or spoken one of them, even if only in your head, then you too are programmed to believe that those with the money are selfish bragging liars and/or thieves and some would have other negative things to say about these individuals.  In our minds we tell ourselves we’ll never be like that… that we won’t give into the evil but we’re still held back because we “know” deep-down that others will hate us.

While others may do this anyway, it has nothing to do with anything negative about money or having money.  We can’t change others but we can change ourselves.

When I was in Jamaica several years ago I had the opportunity to hear Jim Rohn, a business motivational speaker give a talk and one of the things he said I committed to memory: “Many of you believe that if you can make enough money to take care of your family that thats enough.  Thats a big enough dream.  I would tell you you’re wrong.  I would suggest to you that it would be better to make sufficient money so that 30% of what you make takes care of your family and 70% of what you make allows you to change the world around you.”

In other words, if you make more money you can give more so doesn’t it make sense to become wealthy? If you think otherwise then its almost as if you’re saying that charitable causes don’t need anything from you.

So how do we attract abundance to ourselves?  That will be the subject of my next post.

Branding Yourself on the Internet

Apr 13
2009

So you’re MLM company has a website package or your sponsor does and it has all the fancy bells and whistles on it.  Why aren’t people signing up?

First of all if its a website from your company its not about you, even if they allow for some personalization.  But even if you build your own website, people aren’t just going to sign up because you have a web presence.

Your prospects visiting your site are thinking:

  • Who are you?
  • Why should I care?

If you aren’t answering these questions the moment they get to your website then they have already moved on and you’ve lost potential business.

Whether its on iTunes or Amazon, people buy things because they feel that they are receiving value for their money.  They care because they expect to get a benefit and if you aren’t offering them one, no one will buy your product or join your opportunity.

You need to target your audience.  If your website is about joining your opportunity then you may want to identify with their pain of not having enough money at the end of the month or not having enough time left in the day or perhaps both.  Maybe they want to have more time for family and not be a wage slave.  The point is regardless of your target audience you need to share with them your knowledge and your experience regardless of how long you yourself may be involved in your opportunity.  Remember that no matter how flashy the website it still has to be about you and from you because people don’t buy from a website, they buy from a trusted brand, from people like you.

Now if you’re a beginner and you’ve not had any success yet in your chosen MLM, that should not stop you from branding yourself.

People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care.” — Anonymous

When you’re new you may think you have nothing to share but you have plenty of information.  For example you could invite people to learn about your journey in MLM, another reason to document what you do.  Alternatively you could explain how you felt when approached for the opportunity you are in, the reasearch you did, and why you decided to join.  And if you’ve tried other opportunities or different ways to make money you could always share what not to do so that they don’t make the same mistakes.  There are many things that you know even if you’re new and even if none of the above gives you an idea, you could always reasearch a topic and make yourself an “expert” on the subject or you could interview experts.

Regardless of what you are an expert on if you’re trying to get people to join your opportunity then you want to further brand yourself by letting people know what you’re not.  You are not a recruit’em and leave’m.  You are going to sponsor them not recruit them.  They will want to know that even after they have signed up that you’ll still be around to support them… so let them know.

Your goal with your website and your brand is to build trust, so if you are sincere and don’t pretend to know the answers when you don’t then people will value your sincerity when you tell them the truth.

I know I’ve concentrated mostly on your opportunity but if you want to market your product (and I suggest that you target only one product and not your entire, possibly diverse, product line) then the same rules apply.  Instead of talking about why you joined the opportunity you could advise them on issues that your product helps with and how to maximize the benefits of your product.

Essentially to brand yourself effectively on the internet your website needs to be an extension of you.  In fact its no different than branding yourself if the internet didn’t exist.  Be truthful, honest, forthright, and lead your prospects through the often frustrating process of making an intelligent decision by being willing to serve them even if they don’t sign up or buy what you have to offer.

Are prospects chasing you or Are you chasing them?

One of the things I heard when I got started in network marketing years ago was the “3 foot rule” (although I think some people used an 8 foot rule!).  Essentially if someone came within 3 feet of you, they were a prospect.  In truth they were at best a suspect and at worst yet another stranger you were likely to earn the ire of or scare off.

Lets face it in a traditional business people don’t go out trying to drum up business from those who have no interest.  Does the grocer come knock at your door? Well unless you’re getting home delivery service (a real time-saver I must admit), the grocer is not marketing to you.  In fact, I know that when I do go to the store I have to hunt for someone who work there to figure out where they’ve moved my favorite brand of pickles.  And what about the car salesman?  When was the last time you were going past a lot and someone ran out of it and tried to sell you a car? Never you say? So why would anyone expect to find someone willing to join a business by doing this?  And who would want to join except perhaps those willing to go out and acost perfect (and not so perfect) strangers.

Ok so you didn’t use the 3 foot rule but maybe you left a paper trail.  Another thing I heard when I started was that if you’re really in network marketing could you be convicted of it.  In other words have you left a paper trail of business cards, pamphlets, flyers wherever you go.  If you went to the doctor or dentist office, did you leave your brochure mixed in with the all the magazines littering the tables.  Perhaps you were braver and had more time and you put business card flyers on every car always looking out for the ever present mall security.

Don’t get me wrong, these approaches will pay off… eventually but are you attracting the people you want in your business… and how long will it take?  Yes I know I’ve written previously that you do have to work to build your business but I would suggest you want to work smarter not harder.

In reality if you’re leaving flyers on cars, you need to be putting out close to 2000 a day, yes I said two thousand and if you really want to build that should be closer to four or five thousand per day.  The same goes for pamphlets.  If you are approaching anyone that comes within three feet of you I would suggest preparing yourself for a lot of NOs some of which will not likely be that polite.  On top of which you’re going to need to talk to at least twenty to thirty new people every day.

Now if you were like me when I first got started I didn’t have the time for flyering cars and I know I didn’t have the confidence to walk up to perfect strangers but I did know people who were doing these things and were able to be successful in the process.   I also know that those who were doing flyers had no time for anything else and those who were talking to strangers said there were some stores they were not allowed to frequent.

I would suggest to you that you want people to come to you not the other way around.  You want to attract people to you, your products, and your business.  One thing I did hear when I first started was “your worth in the marketplace is determined by what you bring to it”.   This statement set me on a path of learning and understanding the difference between marketing and selling.  With marketing you present advice, and knowledge and you concentrate on building relationships with people and you don’t think about the sale.  What happens when you do this is that people are attracted to you.  Why?  Because you listen and because you offer solutions for their frustrations and then they come to you.

Now here’s the best part, when they come to you, they want what you have to offer.  No more tire kickers or lookie-loos.  They have a genuine desire and you have more time for your family and no one is scared off when they see you coming.

If you haven’t started attracting people to your business then you need to start now.  If you don’t know where to get started I suggest you check out my link for your free MLM videos which gives you in seven videos the start to attracting prospects to you.  Stop the chasing and start working smarter instead of harder!
